Upper Houses Endorses 2 Conventions

Upper Houses Endorses 2 Conventions

KABUL - Already ratified by the Wolesi Jirga, the Senate on Tuesday endorsed Afghanistan’s membership of two international conventions on human trafficking, especially women and children, and silkworm farming.

Najiba Hussain, a member of the upper house commission on international affairs, told the Meshrano Jirga that the Council of Ministers had already approved the convention on human trafficking last year.

She said under the convention, member states assisted each other in preventing human smuggling -- particularly of women and children -- and punishing those involved.

Another member of the panel, Humira Niamati, said the Cabinet had also endorsed Afghanistan’s membership of the convention on silkworm cultivation last year.

Member states help each other in raising the insects and increasing profits from silk production, she told the house. All the 52 MPs present approved Afghanistan’s membership of the two conventions, which the lower house had approved in May. (Pajhwok)
