India to Review Security at its Afghan Missions

India to Review Security at its Afghan Missions

KABUL -India has sent a team to assess the security of its diplomatic missions in Afghanistan a day after its consulate in Herat in the western region of the war-torn country came under a terrorist attack.

The team, which left New Delhi on Saturday, comprises senior officials in the intelligence agencies and National Security Guard as well as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the paramilitary force which has deployed its troops to guard the diplomatic missions of India in Afghanistan.

Sources told Deccan Herald that the team would first travel to Herat and review the security of the consulate, in addition to coordinating with the officials of the Afghanistan government. The team would recommend steps required to enhance the security arrangements in and around the consulate in the wake of the attack on Friday.

The ITBP soldiers and personnel of the Afghan National Security Forces foiled the attack on the Consulate General of India in Herat in western Afghanistan on Friday. All the four heavily-armed terrorists who launched the pre-dawn attack were killed in a fierce gun-battle.

The National Directorate of Security and other agencies of Afghanistan have launched a probe into the attack. Though the findings of the initial probe into the identity of the assailants have not been revealed, New Delhi on Friday stopped short of blaming Pakistan for the attack.

The attack on the CGI at Herat also prompted New Delhi to reassess the security arrangements for all the diplomatic missions of India in Afghanistan – the embassy in Kabul and consulates in Mazar-e-Sharif, Jalalabad and Kandahar. (Monitoring Desk)
