Govt. Calls on UN to Prevent Proxy War

KABUL - A day after the attack on the Indian consulate in Herat, the Afghan Ministry of Interior on Saturday said that it was a plot planned beyond Afghan borders and appealed the UN Security Council to act against those supporting proxy war in Afghanistan.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Interior (MoI), Sediq Sediqi said attacks such as the one on the Indian consulate are implemented by foreign masterminds.

"Proxy war is a major threat to security and stability of Afghanistan. The attack on the Indian consulate was an alarm to the international community and the UN security council must take actions against those who support terrorism beyond our borders," Mr Sediqi said.

Indian diplomatic missions have been attacked in different parts of Afghanistan in the past several years and Pakistan's military intelligence service is frequently accused of being behind the attacks. However, the Indian government has not blamed any group or country for the Friday attack.

Four armed militants rampaged the Indian consulate on eve of the oath taking ceremony of the newly elected Indian Prime Minister Narendera Modi. No personnel at the consulate were hurt in the five-hour-long attack.

"The attack conveyed a message to the newly elected Indian Prime Minister that Pakistan never recognises the Indian influence in Afghanistan and Islamabad hesitates to see relations between Kabul and New Delhi get closer," said Kabul University Political Science Professor, Nasrullah Stanikzai.

Military analyst Jawed Kohestani said part of the Afghan war goes to the proxy war between regional powers, particularly India and Pakistan.

Indian embassy in Kabul and its consulates in Nangarhar and Kandahar provinces were attacked in the past. Indian construction workers have been also targetted by armed groups in eastern Afghanistan, bordering Pakistan. (Tolonews)
