Avoid Raking up Divisive Issues, IEC Asks Runners

KABUL - The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Friday urged the two presidential runners to eschew raking up tribal, ethnic, sectarian and other divisive issue during their campaigns.

The three-week runoff campaign got under way on Thursday. The second round, slated for June 14, features Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai.

Noor Mohammad Noor, the IEC spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the contestants could present to the people their programmes for the country during the stipulated time.

He said the matter would be shared with the two candidates Dr. Abdullah Abdullah and Dr. Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai contesting the final round of presidential ballot.

He warned the two contenders should adhere to the established Independent Election Commission (IEC) rules and regulations otherwise law would come into action against those breaching limitations.

The runners were free to spend 10 million afghanis and they should provided the IEC with the report of their expenditures, he said, adding that the canvassing for the runoff had already started. (Pajhwok)
