ECC Must Resume the Review: Abdullah

ECC Must Resume the Review: Abdullah

KABUL - Leading presidential candidate Abdullah Abdullah reacted to the review of the Electoral Complaints Commission (ECC) on Wednesday at a press conference, adding that there is still an issue with 1,433 result sheets.

Dr. Abdullah said that 1,433 results sheets—each includes 600 votes max—did not have the proper signatures from the observers and the Independent Elections Commission (IEC) officials.

He said the elections commissions are sworn in to perform their job with integrity and honesty. Dr. Abdullah stressed that the ECC continue to review the pending complaints filed by his team and other candidates.

"The time for review is not over yet, so I ask the ECC to address these complaints," he said. "The ECC has only talked about not having enough time to investigate, but they can address all the complaints in one day."

Abdullah says the scanned copies of the result sheets were not released on time by the ECC provincial offices, restricting his team from cross checking the evidence in the 48 hours given.

He warned the ECC that they should understand they are being closely watched and that their wrongdoings will not be tolerated. He added millions of people risked their lives to votes; hence they should respect the clean and genuine votes of the people.

Dr. Abdullah added that the ECC Chairman, Abdul Satar Saadat, confessed to him that his commission cannot review the legitimate complaints because of the lack of time.

On Tuesday night, Mr. Saadat was live on TOLOnews explaining the reason behind the delay.

"The reason behind the delay was because of the large number of complaints," ECC Chairman Abdul Satar Saadat said. "And the public hearings took a total of six days."

Mr. Saadat added that after concluding the complaints process the presidential elections might go into a second round.

The IEC is scheduled to announce the final results of the April 5th presidential elections on Wednesday. (Tolonews)
