KABUL - The last decade in Afghanistan is known as the decade of freedom of speech. Analysts believe that despite government failure in succeeding to institutionalize good governance in the country, it did, however, advance and maintain press freedom for the media.

In his biweekly radio address to the nation, President Hamid Karzai said that he pursued massive efforts to protect the freedom of expression in his, more than, 12 year term in office.

"We upheld major efforts over this period of time to protect freedom of expression despite facing big challenges," Karzai said. "We did not let the newly established press freedom in Afghanistan be harmed in any way or by anyone."

President Hamid Karzai urged that the implementations of democratic values in the country are pertinent at this time.

"Legal guarantee and support will help the media work like the rest of the national institutions," Karzai added. "To work for prosperity of the country and work against the ongoing uncertainties."

In part of his address, president Karzai applauds the works of the media for institutionalizing democratic principles. He offered a tribute to those journalists who lost their lives for press freedom, emphasizing that the growth of media has become an iconic advancement.

The president asked the media to operate within the framework of the law and to maintain national unification and stability in the country.

Meanwhile, analysts also praise Karzai's era for press freedom and call on the next government to follow the same track and preserve this hard earned freedom.

"Undoubtedly, the role of media is crucial," political commentator Sami Daraee said. "The government pursued comprehensive measures to support the media in Afghanistan. The support for media has been unique."

"Hamid Karzai has been an important icon who supported the media over the last 12 years," head of Pajhwok News Agency, Danish Karokhel, said. "We expect the next president to continue supporting the media."

Recently Afghan journalist Najiba Ayoubi and Danish Karokhel were placed among the top 100 people who played a crucial role in providing information.

It is vital to mention that alongside these achievements, Afghan journalists have confronted major threats and intimidations. (Tolonews)
