NEW DELHI - India's Congress party is mulling joining hands with smaller parties to stop the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) from coming power, said a Congress official Friday.
The Chief Minister of the western state of Maharashtra, Prithviraj Chavan, told the media that the chances of BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister were slim, and Congress could form the next government by joining hands with "the third front", in reference to smaller and regional parties, according to Press Trust of India.
"I don't see any great possibility of Narendra Modi becoming the Prime Minister," he was quoted as saying in Mumbai.
According to local surveys, the BJP could win over 270 seats out of 540 in the lower house of Parliament in the on-going election, while the Congress could win about 110.
However, the Congress says the media projections about a possible victory of the BJP are not true. (Xinhua)
