JERUSALEM - UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, said on Sunday that if peace talks do not succeed in achieving an agreement, it would be the end for the Palestinian Authority.

In an interview to Israel Radio Sunday morning, Serry expressed his fears over the possible repercussions of a failure in the peace process.

“President (Mahmoud) Abbas has already been... the leader of the moderate wing of the Palestinian movement, which is committed to a two-state solution,” Serry told the radio.“Another failure will have consequences for him...” Serry added. However, because of the dire consequences, he believes that “they (Israel and the Palestinians) will be serious in this U.S.-led effort to return to meaningful negotiations.

“There’s growing realization on both sides that it is important to make meaningful progress and to make these talks not just another round of talks,” he added. “I believe this goal (of a final status agreement) can be reached within six to nine months.”

Prior to the resumption of the talks, Serry, who had served in his position for the past five years, said in March that the next few months will be “make-or-break” time for the fate of the peace process between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We feel that the two-state solution for the Israeli- Palestinian conflict is on life support and see 2013 as a critical year to get things moving,” he said then.

Peace talks between Israel and the Palestinians resumed on July 30 in Washington D.C. after a three-year halt in talks over Israel ‘s continuing settlement construction in the West Bank. (Xinhua)
