Using Religion for Politics

In a political move, head of Pakistani Cleric Council, and institution under the control of Islamabad, said that suicide attack in Afghanistan, Palestine and Kashmir was permitted. Alama Tahir Ashrafi said that these three countries were under occupation of infidels and it was allowed to carry suicide bombing to liberate them. The statement comes after months long murmurings about possible joint meeting of Afghanistan and Pakistan Ulema to promulgate an order on condemnation of suicide attack.

During that time, time and again, report was released about change in schedule of the meeting. Finally, after huge discussions and bargaining, 21 April was set to hold conference in Kabul aimed to discuss the issue of suicide bombing and violence against civilians. The initiative was put ahead by Afghan government mainly aimed to weaken the core establishment of militants who train illiterate individuals to carry out suicide bombing on the basis of Islamic Shariah.

Recently, the Pakistani Ulema Council boycotted Kabul-Islamabad religious scholars’ conference due to our country’s opposition to allow Taliban representatives in the summit. Alama Tahir Ashrafi, quoted by BBC Persian, said lack of a specific solution for the issue with the Afghan clerics – religious scholars is the other reason they boycotted the religious conference between the two nations.

He also added that the Council under his leadership shared their conditions to attend the Islamic conference in capital Kabul, and in response to a question to boycott the conference he said that Afghan religious scholars did not have specific program. Mr. Ashrafi was quoted as saying that Pakistani religious scholars suggested five conditions, including presence of Taliban representatives, but Afghan clerics did not abide by and that is why they avoided to attend.

However, it was hoped that conference after months-long delay would finally be held in Kabul but analysts from the very start doubted the outcome of such move on affecting the core establishment of militants. Because during Hajj pilgrimage, the highest religious leader of Saudi Arabia in front of millions of pilgrims rejected religious justification of suicide bombing and openly called it Haram and against Sharia law.

Meanwhile, since then, the level of suicide bombing has not decreased. Perhaps, the expected Kabul conference would not prove effective too. But the statement of Ashrafi is completely obsessing. He clearly knotted an Islamic issue to politics. Otherwise, the teachings of Islam would never allow suicide bombing in any case.
