Afghans Dream of Oscar

Our senses have become habitual of receiving disappointing news and all these have turned almost everything to be dark and gloomy. Inflation, unemployment, terrorism, freezing cold and sufferings of poor, corruption and many more issues have not only snatched our contentment but also defamed us on international level.

In such circumstances, a news came as a cold breeze to all the Afghans. An Afghan film has been nominated for internationally acclaimed Oscar Awards. This film by the name of ‘Buzkashi Boys’ has been nominated in the category of ‘Best Second Language Film’. As evident from its name, main theme of the film is about the traditional Afghan game of ‘Buzkashi’ or goat grabbing. The awards will be declared in a grand ceremony to be broadcasted live around the world on Sunday night and according to Afghanistan time, it can be watched live at 6 AM on Monday morning.

Oscar Awards is the most prestigious awards in the world of films in which high quality films are awarded in different categories and it is taken as a matter of great honor if a film succeeds in winning an award in a category. The award ceremony is held every year in Hollywood, USA. Like all the previous years, this ceremony is also expected to be memorable and colorful. These awards bring great fame and name not only for the actors and filmmakers but also to the countries of their origin.

It is worth mentioning here that the film has beautifully portrayed a traditional game and cultural heritage of our country. It has shown to the world the richness of our culture and beauties inherent in it.

The lead actor in the film Fawad Muhammadi, who is only 14, came under limelight with this. He is also going to fly to Hollywood to witness the awards ceremony. The story of this courageous teenager is itself inspirational. He worked as a street vendor in Kabul that he met a foreigner who introduced him to the director of the movie, Sam French.

He still works in the same street of Kabul and he is a student of grade 8 in a local school. Along with him another afghan teenager by the name of Jawanmard has also played an important role in the movie and he would also be accompanying Fawad in the ceremony. If this Afghan films became successful (which might have been decided by the time of publication of this editorial), it would be a matter of great honor and pride for the whole of the nation.
