US Military Presence is Essential

The ruling ambiguity over the presence of US military beyond 2014 has perplexed people. Those who always maintained that foreign countries were here just for the sake of wealth of the country have now started hesitating, seeing the determination of engaged nations, according to the previously fixed schedule.

Though on the basis of economic, military and strategic calculations, all emphasize that the US would not leave the country because it has large strategic and political interests, but unexpected statement for assessment of zero military presence option has fuelled the nightmare of neglect and dejection similar to what took place after withdrawal of USSR.

People are worryingly asking if it is possible that the US once again reaches to a conclusion that demerits of engagement overrule the advantages of its national interests. Will the US once again pull back and deal with the threat of Islamists from home with lesser economic expense as it is presently piloting in the Waziristan of Pakistan? What will happen to Afghanistan if the economic problem at home pushes the government to strengthen the security measures inside its borders and leave people to live with their own miseries?

No doubt, the approach of government towards its allies is, to a certain extent, questionable. As the foreign minister, Zulmai Rasoul, after visit of President Karzai from Washington, said, “The international community is obliged to equip and support Afghan security forces. It is the right of the nation”.

It is not known what kind of right he was talking about particularly when over 90 percent of opium of the world
is produced in the country; terrorists who claim to be Afghanistan’s supporter impose visible challenge to global peace and security.

Certainly, people are mad on nations that constantly threaten their serenity. Though it should be noticed that Afghans themselves suffer from phenomena of terrorism and high level of opium cultivation, but people in the world consider all Afghans as nation and, thus, mistakenly refer to all.

Considering the above issue, what good thing we have done for the international community that they should pay back in the form of pouring cash and equipping our security forces. Indeed, we are acting in a manner that international community is guilty in the case of decades of our sufferings.

Hope we come to an understanding and be thankful to all the support that the US and other countries have been providing. Anyhow, the presence of US soldiers is highly necessary for training and guidance purposes. Hope the concerned authorities understand this fact and do not press on Washington that it decides to pull out all its security forces as it did in the case of Iraq. Otherwise, the future is doomed to historical tumult.
