Snowfall and Precautions

The heavy snowfall that started on Wednesday and continued till late at night on Thursday was the first heavy snowfall of the season.

Although residents of Kabul are much familiar with such snowfalls and till now, this year's winter has not proved as severe as it was the last year but this snowfall suddenly created a lot many problems. On Saturday, when the snowfall had stopped and first working day of the week started, it looked very difficult to start it with a routine ease. The snow on the road had frozen and thus traffic was very less.

Thanks that all the educational institutes were closed on account of winter vacations, otherwise, there could have been a lot many problems for the students of schools and universities. Similarly, all those people who had to reach to their offices or job places suffered a lot to find a means of transport.

Last year's severe winter, comprising of incessant and heavy snowfall and rain, accompanied with the blizzards of wind, created a lot many problems to the citizens. The roads were blocked, slippery roads made the cars crash with each other and other similar incidents left some sad memories behind along with the loss of money and lives. More tragic were the conditions of poor migrants living in the tent camps in the outskirts of city where the harsh cold weather snatched the lives of a number of children.

This year, once again, the situation doesn't seem to be different at all. Last year, when the winter was busy in its brutal hunt, a lot of claims were made for the coming year but till now, there has not been any sign of any such activity by the concerned authorities.

Leaving aside the problem of refugees who have been settled in the tent camps outside the city, as there is present an exclusive ministry to tackle with the issue of refugees returning to the country from the neighboring countries of Pakistan and Iran, but there are few small steps that can be easily taken and citizens of capital can be saved of a lot many troubles.

After every snowfall, the biggest problem emerges in form of roads frozen by the snow on which vehicles cannot move easily and these slippery roads not only cause accidents but also slow down the movement of traffic, causing the traffic jams on already crowded roads of Kabul. Salt was spread on some of the roads that had melted the snow and made the road ready for smooth movement.

This is not a kind of work which should be impossible for the municipality or other government authorities. It is hoped that government authorities will be ready for keeping the roads free of frozen ice whenever the city was showered under the heavy snow.
