A Threat to Future Stability of Afghanistan

Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF) are the hope for the government and people of Afghanistan. In about two years, all security tasks of Afghanistan will be handled by its own security forces as the US-led NATO troops are set to withdraw from the country by the end of 2014. Any post-2014 presence of foreign troops will not be for combat purposes but for training and boosting the capacity of ANSF. Afghan National Army and Police have turned into a strong force after the ouster of Taliban regime from government but pitfalls do exist.

The Afghan government is quite confident that ANSF will be able to stand on their own against Taliban and other groups of insurgents after NATO forces withdraw. But disappointing incidents have been happening that have resulted in doubts over the integrity of ANSF.

Green on blue attacks that have taken lives of 61 coalition members so far this year, on Monday, took one more life. According to Afghan police officials, a female Afghan police officer shot and killed an American civilian adviser at Kabul Police Headquarters.

The shooter who is now in Afghan custody has been identified as Nargis who worked in the Legal and Gender Equality Department of the Ministry of Interior. This is the first case of insider shooting in which a women is involved. The insurgents have been utilizing women in launching terror attacks including suicide bombing. Such a practice is against the tradition and religion of Afghans. Nonetheless, the Taliban who call themselves soldiers of Islam adopt any tactic to reach their targets.

There have also been repeated incidents in which an Afghan soldier or police opens fire at his colleagues, kill them and then escapes to the areas controlled by Taliban. Such an incident took place on Monday in Jawuzjan Province, at the village of Turaghali Afghania. Dur Mohammad, commander at the check-post, shot and killed five officers under his command, according to Gen. Abdul Aziz Ghairat, the provincial police chief. He said the commander fled after the shooting.

Defection of Afghan police to Taliban is another annoying phenomenon occurring repeatedly. Local authorities in Badghis province reported on Monday that at least 10 Afghan police officers have joined Taliban taking weapons and vehicles with themselves.

There are claims that Taliban sympathizers have infiltrated the ranks of ANSF. This fact is the root cause of insider attacks, death of Afghan soldier or police in the hands of their own colleague and defection of ANSF members to Taliban. It is re-emphasized that the government and NATO authorities bolster their verification and background-checking process to clean ANSF from people connected to insurgents. If left unaddressed, such issues may pose serious threats to future stability of Afghanistan.
