President Karzai’s Pledge

In the beginning of his four days visit to India President Hamid Karzai speaking to that country's CNN-IBN television network said that Afghanistan would hunt down Taliban attackers who shot Pakistani teenage activist Malala Yousafzai for speaking up for girls' rights to education.

This is, in some ways, an acknowledgement of presence of Mullah Fazlullah - the man who is deemed to have engineered attack on Malala - in Afghanistan. If not, Afghan Security Forces cannot go to target him in Pakistan.

Apart from this, however, Mr. Karzai's pledge to hunt down attackers of the little girls' education activist, Malala Yousafzai establishes the fact that he strongly opposes those who hinder women education. Such an opposition is a pressing requirement in Afghanistan where challenges remain solid for girl's education in a major number of its provinces.

During their government, the Taliban confined women inside the walls of their home, banned their education and did not allow them to work in offices. After their government was toppled in 2001, they have never given up creating obstacles for women education. Over the last ten years, the Taliban have targeted school-going girls, their teachers and women working with government offices and NGOs.

There were at least 185 documented attacks on schools and hospitals in Afghanistan last year, according to the United Nations, and the majority of those attacks were attributed to armed groups opposed to educating females. For a huge percentage of Afghan population, especially the women, getting education can still be a reason for their killing.

In spite of serious threats to their life, millions of girls are attending schools. Threats are high in provinces under Taliban influence. Each one of the girls who do not give up getting education and do not fear threats of insurgents is a Malala.

The people of Afghanistan expect President Karzai not to only hunt down the attackers of Malala but also kill or capture those who attack girls with acid, burn their schools and poison them. Afghans are waiting for the day when they can send their girls and boys to get education without fear of any kind.
