Obama’s Reelection and Afghanistan

President Obama has been elected for a second term in a decisive poll by the people of the United States. The results came with a clear-margin victory for Barack Obama against his republican rival Mitt Romney, though earlier survey polls showed a neck-to-neck competition. Addressing a rally at his hometown of Chicago in his victory speech, President Obama said the best is yet to come.

In what has been the inspiration for American democracy, Mitt Romney in his concession speech said he prays the President will be successful in guiding American nation.

US presidential elections were given a wide coverage by the international media. TV channels, radio broadcasts, newspapers and other sources of media were giving every minute detail of these elections. As the result of the elections is going to decide the fate of America for next four years and being the strongest economic and military power of the world, rest of the world is also going to be affected with the result of these elections.

In Afghanistan as well the US election was covered with fervor in local electronic and print media with live coverage of the results and analysis. Prior to the polling day, there had been several prime-time talk shows on leading private channels hosting Afghan experts with understanding of the American electoral system to explain the overall complicated process.

There were not opinionated views in Afghanistan toward the republican and democrat rivalry for White House, as their foreign policy on issues related to Afghanistan had not been much different. On opinion pages, we have been critical of the slow improvement toward the outcomes of President Obama's AfPak policy agendas. His troop surge for a robust counterinsurgency was a success; however the most significant factor of the conflict in Afghanistan has been safe havens of Taliban across the Durand Line.

While commenting on the success of President Obama for another term, spokesman of President Karzai said now the Obama Administration needs to pursue the roots of terrorism in Afghanistan—the safe havens, recruitment and training grounds in Pakistan. He said there will not be peace or a solution to the conflict unless Taliban and other terrorists are denied sanctuary across the border.

The US Ambassador in Kabul Mr. Cunningham said, "Americans have sacrificed much, and contributed much, in Afghanistan. President Obama is committed to our enduring partnership, our strategic partnership, with the people of Afghanistan. The American people have spoken, as they have in 56 previous presidential elections. The votes have been counted, and the work of our nation will continue uninterrupted."

Both the candidates, Barack Obama and Mitt Romney clearly told during their election campaigns about their future plans and strategies. As far as Afghanistan is concerned, there has not been much difference between the policies of both the leaders.

America and other foreign allies have assisted a lot in strengthening Afghanistan since the inception of democracy in 2001. Since then, continuous help has been extended to Afghanistan on financial, technical and moral grounds. Unfortunately, our internal corruption did not let us to utilize this cooperation and aid properly and as a result, country is still facing lot many threats.

It is necessary that our leaders should assure the new American president of doing all the efforts to sincerely fight militancy, internal corruption and other problems that come under the control of the government.
Similarly, we should not be expecting too much from the new American president because it is certain that every government works to protect its aims and benefits. Anyhow, it is necessary that Afghan government should try its best to adopt the habit of self-dependency.

This can be achieved by working hard to develop new industries and generating new sources of income inside the country or by cutting the expenses of government. Heedless and uncontrollable and mostly useless expenses of government need to be controlled so that the money saved so should be utilized for more useful and essential projects for the welfare of people and development of country.
