Broken Roads of Kabul

Traffic of Kabul roads is at its worst nowadays due to the “development work under progress” and broken roads mainly in Qala Fatullah and parts of Taimani. With few days to Eid, traffic jams under the scorching heat of August and unbearable thirst of Ramadan, mayor of Kabul should take immediate notice of the mess in streets and order completion of asphalting the roads.

Some major roads are broken and blocked with sign boards of “development work under progress”. Our traffic system was not any good, now the mess by Kabul Municipality has made it worse. It takes hours from Qala Fatullah and Taimani to center of the city. When there are such projects underway, lack of coordination causes disruption in the process.

Due to the development work, there are no alternative roads, thus one-way entrances are being used for vehicles coming from two opposite directions. In the main parts of the city including Wazir Akbar Khan, Taimani, Shahr Naw and Deh Afghanan, masses are faced up with cumbersome traffic problems. Junctions show a situation of mismanagement by traffic police.

It is beyond understanding when will the concerned authorities learn. Before such a “massive” work, there should have been some alternative considerations for the smooth flow of traffic.

For over a week now, the abovementioned roads are broken and left uncovered. Without any prior notice, or information boards, Kabulis do not know why the holes are dug and the work left uncompleted.

Kabul Municipality is notorious for lack of supervision and oversight on its development and road construction projects sub-contracted to private companies that dig the streets and make a mess of the entire city.

Traffic Department is also needed to keep the traffic flow smooth and working, making alternatives for roads with “development work under progress”. There should be a robust coordination with Kabul Municipality for a better management of traffic nowadays.
