Genocide in Making

The targeted killings in southwestern Pakistani city of Quetta continue as two more people from the Hazara community were shot dead on Friday. About 24 innocent people have been killed in the last two weeks. The provincial law enforcement agencies and intelligence of security establishment have failed to control the situation. Thousands of activists from the Hazara Democratic Party staged a sit-in in front of the Balochistan Governor and Chief Minister houses in Quetta on Friday.

As the protest was going on, armed assailants opened fire on a watchman in a shopping area of the city center. Some hours later, a women and her son were shot dead in the suburb of the city.

Provincial Governor Balochistan Nawab Magsi has feared that Quetta is on the verge of civil war. He admitted that the civilian government has completely failed to maintain law and order in the provincial capital, where hundreds of Hazaras have been killed by the terrorists of the Al-Qaeda allied banned sectarian group Lashkar-e-Jhangvi.

While talking to protesters on Friday, Governor Balochistan said if the civilian government failed to control the situation, Army would have to be deployed in Quetta, which would make the administrative affairs difficult for the provincial government.

A worldwide protest has been called by HDP from April 20-30 in Europe, Australia, America and Asian countries. A similar protest demonstration was held on October 01 in all major cities of the world last year.

But the Pakistani Government and its strong security establishment have not bothered to take action against a bunch of sectarian terrorists who operate without impunity. Elements from within the provincial government in Balochistan and law enforcement agencies are involved in the targeted killing campaign against the Hazara minority of Pakistan, who mostly live in Quetta.

According to a recent report, recently a shipment of 236 NATO P-226-9mm pistols was smuggled to the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi from Afghanistan. The international media and champions of human rights in the Western world have largely ignored genocide in making.

Daily killings of a tiny minority of 600,000 people in a Pakistani city go unnoticed in Western capitals and media. People from the Hazara community living in Quetta are forced to migrate. Life for ordinary people has been made a hell, just because they are from an ethnic minority and religious belief.

The United Nations Human Rights Council should take notice of the persecution of Hazaras in Pakistan. Negligence of Pakistani Government and its strong security establishment shows elements from within the authorities are involved in this genocide.
