Tiring War - the Biggest Question

The war in Afghanistan has proved to have its global impacts. Concerns prevail in every country that has deployed its troops in Afghanistan. The sooner the war comes to an end, the better it will be for Afghanistan, region and the world. The three decade war has snatched peace and prosperity from the lives of Afghans, although as a human being living in peace is their basic right. Nonetheless, at the juncture Afghanistan is standing today, no one can expect a safe future for the people of this country.

Amid the schedule set for withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan and sharply deteriorating security, economic and political condition, concerns have dramatically increased among Afghans.

The US that is leading the counter-terrorism war in Afghanistan says its people are tired of the war. The US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said on Tuesday, "We have been through 10 years of war in the United States, and there is no question that the American people are tired of war, just as the Afghan people are tired of war."

Panetta's statement comes at time when according to a survey, conducted among 986 adults from March 21-25, just 23 percent of Americans believe the U.S. is doing the right thing by fighting in Afghanistan. That is an indicator of decreasing interest of Americans in the involvement of their country in Afghanistan.

The Afghans too are sick of the lingering war. Not of the war but also of their government that is highly corrupt and have failed to bring about any positive change in security, good governance and rule of law. The Karzai administration is lacking the will to positively respond to the growing demands for fundamental reforms in the political system of the country.

The current centralized government has hampered Afghanistan's development in all basic areas including security and has caused the ten year international aids go futile. When will Afghans get rid of the war that has extremely made them and the world tired is the biggest question for which the Afghan government and the international community have no proper answer.
