Infiltration of Taliban Should be Stopped

Again two NATO soldiers have been killed by a person in Afghan National Army uniform. The incident has occurred in Helmand province of Afghanistan. This is making the crisis of infiltration into Afghan national security forces extremely serious. It is also affecting the relations between international community and Afghan government. Holy Quran burning episode on Feb. 20 and its violent aftermath, the killing of civilians by an American soldier were the terrible incidents that continue to have their effect on the relationship between Afghan government and its international allies.

Now that Afghan government and international community and forces need to work together to tackle the Taliban influence and violence, they are involved in damage control and investigations into unwelcomed and unwanted incidents.

The Afghan government long ago called the Taliban and other insurgents as brothers that remain unhappy with other brothers. But the bitter fact is that the Taliban militants continue to create security problems and try to seep into government institutions as well as into secure areas.

Afghan people believe that the Taliban can join peace process provided that they discontinue sticking to their destructive ideology and remaining connected with terrorist networks in the region and in the world. The Taliban militants had earlier shown willingness to work out an understanding with international community about the situation down the road in Afghanistan.

But now they have suspended the peace talks because they know the weaknesses of the current government as well as the announced withdrawal of international community from Afghanistan.

Despite the expected and usual relative lull in the winter, which should have evolved into full calm given the ongoing reported negotiations between the Taliban and representatives from some major countries, Taliban militants continued to kill people during the last winter.

The fear is that Taliban may launch even a more intensified spring and summer offensive as a part of effort to make political score in the ongoing peace process. So it is high time for Afghan government and international community to take the Taliban threat seriously and swing from the lax approach to a stricter one.

Otherwise both Afghan people and international soldiers will continue to suffer and Taliban will be provided with the pretext to tighten their grip over Afghanistan.
