Security Threat from Within

Abdul Saboor, the police intelligence officer at the Interior Ministry who is alleged to have murdered two American advisers last Saturday is still at large. It is a matter of serious concern the way he opened fire inside a room of Ministry and could easily escape the building without anyone attempting to arrest him. It is also questionable that he had access to high-profile daily security briefs. How a junior intelligence office had been privy to that level of official confidentiality?

The investigation should answer the above confusions. It shows serious flaws in the administration and entire setup of our security apparatus that a killer gets away in broad daylight from inside the Ministry which is literally the Headquarters of Police.

Interior Ministry officials have come up with another ridiculous claim that Saboor's mental condition was not normal and he had problems at home. How could this go unnoticed before the murders? As an intelligence staff of the Ministry, if a person with mental problems goes unnoticed, it shows serious flaws. The investigators should find out the mystery in this tragic incident that has brought the entire credibility of our security apparatus under serious questions.

The issue of infiltration in Afghan National Security Forces is the biggest threat from within. The rise of incidents in the last couple of months in which soldiers of Army or National Police have turned up their weapons on their foreign trainers has already showed a crack in our National Security Forces on which all the hopes are bet for the situation after 2014 when international troops will withdraw.

The incidents involving attacks on coalition troops by Afghan soldiers or police have been an increasing occurrence in the last couple of years. In some cases, it has been Taliban infiltrators, and in others, Afghan soldiers have turned their guns on their trainers. There seems to be something deeply wrong with the trainings of our security forces and the monitoring process.

The Defense Ministry has come up with a contentious report about the factors behind such incidents. They believe those soldiers involved in such attacks have family ties in Pakistan. Mere family ties could not be major reason. There is something wrong with the trainings of ANA and recruitment procedures.

Our security threats are more from within the National Security Forces than other factors. The international community need to take a patient and serious review of this fact.
