Abrupt Withdrawal, Extremely Disastrous

After the Koran burning, the situation has turned extremely dangerous in Afghanistan. The incident has antagonized Afghans who have firm religious hold on their minds and become easily emotional and aggressive over sensitive issues pertaining to Islam. Four NATO soldiers have been killed by individuals linked to Taliban.

Insurgents have called the killings 'a revenge' for the burning of the holiest book of Muslims. In about a week of protests, 30 Afghans lost their lives while dozens were wounded. On Monday, a suicide bomber struck his explosive laden car at the gate of Jalalabad airport where NATO troops are also deployed. The explosion killed at least nine civilians and injured 12 others.

Amid deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, there are speculations that NATO countries will abruptly withdraw their forces from Afghanistan. That is an idea disastrous both for Afghanistan and the world. Already, foreign advisers have been called back from Kabul or instructed to remain confined to where they are accommodated.

In such a circumstance, the US Ambassador to Afghanistan, Ryan Crocker has come up with the most right idea. The United States should resist the urge to pull troops out of Afghanistan ahead of schedule in the wake of violence against Americans over the burning of the Qur'an at a U.S. military base, Crocker said Sunday. "This is not the time to decide that we are done here. We have got to redouble our efforts. We've got to create a situation that Al-Qaeda is not coming back," Crocker said.

There are serious concerns over the withdrawal of NATO troops set to complete by the end of 2014. It is believed that the plan has boosted up Taliban's spirit and morale and they are waiting for re-gaining power in Afghanistan. At the same time, one should not be optimistic about the outcomes of negotiation process with Taliban.

Any effort aimed to pull out international troops before the announced schedule will put a pressure on Afghan security forces that they will not be able to withstand it. Afghanistan will turn into a more dangerous state than its 90s.
