Karzai’s Failed Attempts to Cultivate Support among Taliban

President Hamid Karzai has been trying to portray the Taliban as the children of Afghanistan that wish to work for peace in this land. The Taliban and other insurgent militants have been called by the president with most sacred names, such as brothers and children of this land. But the Taliban have betrayed these sacred names and have been perpetrating the most atrocious crimes across the country.

President Karzai not only has not been able to garner legitimacy and support for his appeasement policy towards the evil forces of Taliban and other insurgent outfits but has also lost the backing of major political actors- individual leaders and large influential political parties- that have been the main supporters of the democratic political system and president Karzai's administration over the last ten years since the fall of Taliban regime in late 2001.

In his recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, president Karzai stated that the Taliban may wish to strike a peace deal even if it is based on allowing the permanent military presence of the United States in Afghanistan. He also unveiled that the Taliban have had talks with the US representatives.

But unfortunately Taliban-as expected- contradicted and debunked president Karzai's statement. It shows that president Karzai is making every attempt to ingratiate himself and curry favor with the Taliban militants but they do not regard him as one of themselves and continue to embarrass him in the eye of Afghan public for his confused or appeasing statements, which have been mainly aimed at cultivating support for himself among specific identity group in the country so as to pave the way for clinging to power directly or indirectly.

This attempt by president Karzai- which began a few years ago- is failing because the Taliban militants are connected with a broader web of extremist ideologies, networks of terrorists and other elements in the region that pursue a policy of keeping Afghanistan destabilized. So it is not easy for the Taliban to discontinue their links and relations with those forces that continue to remain at play in the conflict in Afghanistan.

In fact, Taliban, down to their ideologies and regional connections, cannot come to a decision to begin to work for Afghanistan as an independent political unit of international system that has to look for the security and prosperity of its own citizens.

Afghanistan has been through a decade of missed opportunities and there appears to be a very limited amount of time left for the country to work with its international allies and supporters to effect changes to the people's lives and establish a permanent peace and political stability. President Karzai's continued unacceptable behavior shows that this limited amount of time is also going to be treacherously wasted. Only political parties and alliances can step in to prevent the disastrous strategic mistakes being made by president Karzai.
