How should Afghans be Confident?

Development in the Afghanistan's various sectors over the last decade is laudable, although rampant corruption exists. With international community's financial and non-financial support, noteworthy improvements are observable in democracy, civil society activities, human rights, media, education and other important sectors. Despite world's pledge to continue supporting Afghanistan for the long terms, concerns over future social, economic and security stability remain solid as the foreign troops are set to withdraw by 2014 and Taliban, the main insurgent group, are still at large posing severe threats to the life of Afghan people.

In the Bonn conference concluded in December, the world committed that it will support Afghanistan for a decade after 2014. Most countries pledged to provide aids to reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. But those aids, if the security condition goes uncontrolled, would be of no use. World's economically and politically strong countries almost always say they are standing behind Afghanistan. They, most of the times, truly act upon what they say. But the question is, "Will they be able to consistently support Afghanistan once the international troops are out of Afghanistan?"

The Afghan Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Monday said in a statement that Germany, the US, Australia, China and Japan reassured their long-term support toward the Afghan government at a recently-concluded security conference in Munich, Germany.

On the sidelines of the two-day conference, Afghan Foreign Minister, Zalmay Rassoul, met with his foreign counterparts including Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state who not only reassured her country's long-term support with Afghanistan but also said the recent remarks by Leon Panetta, US defense secretary regarding ending the combat mission in Afghanistan in the mid of 2013 were incorrect. It is quite amazing that one US official passes a remark on Afghanistan and the other pops up to counter him. How should Afghans be confident that US commitments for assisting Afghanistan are solid?

Ambiguous and inconsistent statements from US authorities have caused questions in the minds of government officials and people in Afghanistan regarding their countries future stability. Vague statements, definitely, show lack of coordination among US official on Afghanistan. And this is disastrous for Afghanistan at this important juncture.
