Greening Afghanistan

High population shift from provinces and rural areas along with un-built roads and out of date vehicles, machineries and low quality fuel caused Kabul weather being polluted and thereby residents are suffering because of different type of diseases in their daily lives. This problem has recently been escalated and changed to crux, as well as, shocked the government of Afghanistan to take necessary actions towards dissolving this problem either by implementing any inter-Kabul environment oriented program or finding any alternative through decreasing and shifting Kabul residents to any new city called New Kabul city.

With regards to this problem, the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock (MAIL) in tandem with other relevant partners have initiated a program called Greening Afghanistan Program. The purpose of this program is to combat environmental pollution and improve cleaning weather of Kabul city through distributing and planting thousands of Pine trees in collaboration with Kabul Municipality.

In addition, MAIL has provided and distributed some Banners to both central and provincial government levels that are painted with meaningful slogans conveying awareness messages on environmental protection and keeping Afghanistan Green.

This program with regards to all costs is highly considerable and gives good view to Kabul residents, the trees planted in the middle and along side of the roads looked green initially, but has now started being wilted due to lack of water and undue neglect of concerned authorities.

Sixty percent of Kabul residents shifted recently from rural areas and return from abroad and experiencing a newly city life, has not been habituated with inspiring dusts and smokes affecting their health.

Such program if followed well would get effects in the long-run, not soon. Thousands of dollars have been allocated and spent for such purposes. The main problem with the government of Afghanistan is that there is not a concrete plan for protection of such programs to be maintained and continued sustainably. Similar programs have implemented before but due to improper management, the program failed.

The existing trees planted along sides of Kabul Road for the time being will change the view of Kabul city, and its impact on improving environment and weather will be seen few years later. The saplings are like child that needs more and more care in its first age, if not a provided proper nourishment, they will be wilted and dried soon.

The Kabul Municipality should not neglect and overlook, these trees need proper water management, at least twice a week; otherwise all the initiatives taken for this program will go in vain. It is the main responsibility of the government to provide a healthy environment for its people so that the resident can live a healthy life with no pollution.
