Block the Propaganda Tools of Militants

Some US Senators have called Twitter to block the accounts used by Taliban and their sympathizers who upload hate messages and spread their propaganda. There are some twitter accounts that update news from Taliban insurgency. Some of them are believed to be officially related to Al Emarah, the media wing of Taliban. These twitter accounts are regularly updated with news of glorifying the insurgent attacks and spreading hatred against foreign and Afghan security forces.

But unfortunately, these Taliban media propaganda tools were promoted by some western media outlets who reported when the accounts were created and linked them to their stories online. Reporters of some international media outlets based in Kabul regularly share links of the tweets and source of the account. The Taliban account has now thousands of 'followers'. Taliban is successful with the help of these media outlets who are giving unnecessary hype and promotion to Taliban propaganda unintentionally.

Twitter in its 'terms of use' has in clear words written that any account or user using violence and threats will not be allowed use of service. But strange is that not only groups linked to global terrorists like Al-Qaeda are using social networking tools like Facebook and twitter to promote their cause, the social networking websites have not bothered to take action against these terrorist organizations using their services for propaganda and spreading violent and hate messages. It is clear violation of terms of use of these companies, and they should delete all such accounts that represent terror groups or promote their ideology and fear.

We request those foreign journalists who cover Afghanistan to stop promoting Taliban propaganda by giving credibility to their lies through sharing their tweets. Comparing the Afghan Government's online effectiveness to that of Taliban is nonsense. By using twitter for spreading lies and propaganda, Taliban do not become superior online.

The US Government and Congress must take legal action and sue twitter for the Taliban accounts. Some congressmen have called the company to delete those accounts, but Twitter has not taken any action yet, rather they are defying the demands.

It is not justified to say that ISAF or NATO who are also involved in "act of violence" and share the news of it online, have twitter accounts. These forces are legal and authorized, while militant groups like the Taliban and Al Qaeda are terrorists who kill innocent civilians.

Another Al Qaeda affiliated group LashkarJhangvi has also twitter account and share the video links of their violent attacks on innocent people. Lashakar is on the list of Foreign Terrorists Organization of the US State Department, but twitter has allowed the group to run an account. Someone should sue the company, since they are not taking any action despite repeated calls.
