Taliban Participated in First Islamic Awakening Conference

Iran holds on its head the accusation of directly meddling into the internal affairs of Afghanistan and giving hands to the enemies of Afghanistan, the Taliban. Although the Iranian regime had extremely sour relations with Taliban's Emirate of Afghanistan - 1996-2001, after the US invasion of Afghanistan, the US authorities have time and again blamed the Islamic Republic of playing a double game in Afghanistan.

It secretly supports the Taliban by providing them with equipments and funds and at the same time claiming to back the reconstruction process in Afghanistan. Afghans welcome the share of Iranian government in rebuilding of their country but never tolerate its meddling in national affairs of Afghanistan.

In the mid of last month, the first Islamic Awakening conference in Tehran was organized by Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say in the nation's policies. The conference drew more than 700 scholars and Islamist political figures from around the world.

But wait there is more. In the conference, also participated a delegation constituted by Taliban members on the invitation from Iranian religious cluster. That is definitely against the wants of Afghans who have always opposed negotiation with Taliban based on the fact that the Taliban lack independency and willingness to end the war in Afghanistan through table talks.

The presence of Taliban representative in the quietly held Islamic Awakening Conference signals the depth of relations present between Iranian government and Taliban leadership.

The Iranian government involved the Taliban team in the conference because it wanted it to directly talk to Burhan-ud-Din Rabbani, the Head of Afghanistan High Peace Council who also participated in the said conference.

But the meeting did not happen, albeit Rabbani met a suicide bomber in house on his return to Afghanistan which resulted in his death and caused Hamid Karzai to announce cancellation of the process expected to lead to negotiation with Taliban. In short, the Islamic Republic of Iran has links with Taliban. Based on that, it tries to grab protection to its interests in Afghanistan after the US withdrawal in 2014.
